Plasma Physicist and Padma Shri Awardee
Professor P. I. John is a prominent Indian plasma physicist. He established a modern experimental plasma physics programme at PRL in 1972, where he was the Chairman of the Plasma Physics Group until 1982, which developed into the Institute for Plasma Research. In 1997, he set up the Facilitation Centre for Industrial Plasma Technologies, where a variety of plasma based technologies were developed and transferred to industries.
He was a consultant to the International Atomic Energy Agency, Vienna and the United Nations University, Tokyo. In 2002-03, he served as the Head, Physics Section, IAEA, Vienna.
He has taken a lead role in developing the National Fusion Programme. He participated in ITER negotiations and helped set up ITER-India. This is the nodal agency for coordinating the Indian participation in the seven-nation programme to set up the World's first thermonuclear fusion reactor at Cadarache in France.
